State Rep. Dan Leonard (R-Huntington) supports the United States Supreme Court’s decision today restraining the government’s ability to significantly limit “the right to keep and bear arms.”
Last year, Rep. Leonard signed onto the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) amicus brief in this case, exhibiting his support for the NRA and its philosophy protecting the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.
“I have been a long-time supporter of gun owners’ rights and I signed onto the amicus brief in favor of the Second Amendment right. Today’s decision will hopefully mean an end to local infringement on the Second Amendment right to bear arms guaranteed to us by the Bill of Rights,” said Rep. Leonard.
The laws passed by the City of Chicago and the Village of Oak Park in Illinois completely banned hand guns. Although in a case two years ago, the Supreme Court had protected an individual’s right to possess guns, that decision applied to self-defense in the home and only applied to federal laws. Today’s case strikes down bans passed at the local level, broadly applying the Second Amendment to state and local laws, as well as federal laws.
