Major Fuel Spill at Gladieux Refinery in Huntington, Indiana

Last night, March 10th, 2010, an employee at a Gladieux bulk fuel storage terminal in Huntington, Indiana forgot to turn off a transfer pump (used to transfer liquids between tanks) at the end of his shift.  The results were a 100,000 to 200,000 gallon fuel spill at the Huntington terminal which was discovered this morning, March 11, 2010 at around 6 am.  Huntington emergency response personel were on the scene for a “just in case” measure according to a firefighter on the scene and to oversee recovery of the spilled fuel.  The response team was on the scene for over 12 hours throughout the day.  A majority of the fuel was recovered, and all of the fuel was contained within the dike system surrounding the terminal.  Further testing will be performed to determine what, if any, further action will be required to treat the ground soil within the dike system.  Only a slight fuel smell was detectable on the road nearby the plant and no fuel is known to have escaped the dike system.  Nearby residents weren’t evacuated or otherwise interrupted by the spill.
