Construction begins this week on the 3,800 foot taxiway rehabilitation project at the Huntington Municipal Airport. This project will enhance the longevity and safety of the airport rehabilitating the existing taxiway pavement and installing new taxiway edge reflectors. While the total project costs are $362,528, State and Federal funding will provide $353,465. The Huntington Board of Aviation Commissioners (BOAC) share will only cost 2.5% of the total project costs, or $9,063. In addition, BOAC will receive State and Federal funding totaling $87,750 for the purpose of updating the Airport’s Airport Layout Plan. This plan will be used as a guide to the BOAC during the ongoing airport expansion program.
The project was designed and let for bid by NGC Aviation Consultants, based out of Indianapolis. In August, the construction was awarded to the lowest, responsive bidder, E&B Paving. E&B Paving, has multiple offices throughout the state of Indiana, including Huntington. The Airport Layout Plan will be accomplished by NGC.
The Huntington Municipal Airport is used by both private and corporate aircraft. According to pilot flight plans logged with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), approximately 17 companies utilized the Huntington Municipal Airport in 2007 to access Huntington County businesses. The airport currently has 75 based aircraft, with 16 of those aircraft owned by local businesses. Since 1987, the based aircraft at Huntington has increased over 70%. In 2007, Huntington Municipal Airport had the 10th largest based aircraft total among 57 General Aviation airports within Indiana.
