It is always refreshing to read something with positive content and to hear about good things that are happening in the community. With everyones costs raising dramatically almost on a daily basis, we NEED good news to somewhat counteract the depressing and uncontrolable situations we are bombarded with!
Some of you may have already heard about the “VolunteersInProgress” program, and for those of you who haven’t, please allow me to fill you in at least in part, on what’s going on lately. There are currently two huge and exciting projects that are surfacing and gaining momentum. The first of which is a project called “Erie Village” which will involve the restoration of the old Erie Department Store block (on E Market Street) and transforming the area from “Where NOT to be” into a visually enticing part of our local and significant historical heritage.
The second is the Millican block just south of the railroad tracks (on Jefferson Street) and across from the Herald~Press. I understand that there are some serious financial backers for the river walk way once they are convinced that the community is serious about making it happen.
As individuals, you can appreciate the things that need to be done around the house, and is to say the least, overwhelming. I’m sure that I’m not the only person that has a mental list of.. windows that need to be washed, a lawn that needs attention, furnace filters that need to be changed, making sure the oil gets changed in the car, carpets that need shampooed.. sound familiar?? The worst thing is these are merely the first that comes to mind!
Our community isn’t any different. Except in the community environment, there is no one that steps up and takes responsibility for most of these energy and time consuming tasks. The city departments usually are too busy with more pressing matters, under staffed, and already have a lengthily list of “must do” projects superseding the “really needs done” list. Eventually though, the “should be” done projects erode to the point that they evolve into problems that must be dealt with. Just a matter of time, and the corrective costs rise dramatically.
So what can we do to promote a better community for all of us, and reverse the erosion effect that we refer to as simple preventative maintenance? Simple. Become involved, speak up, and participate with others in city and county worthwhile projects. This in itself will assure that our tax dollars are stretched further.
An example of this would be new sidewalks that were installed no more than a couple of years ago basically in front of Richards Restaurant north to Carlisle Crossing. We, as taxpayers spent over $50,000 on this project, but to look at it now as the new sidewalk has never been taken care, it appears derelict and that it needs to be replaced again already!!!
An elite group has been formed and you are invited to be an active part in reshaping the future of our city, and helping to create a better living environment for all. A mission statement is presented here for your approval.
Finding civic solutions.. Solutions based on collective common sense that work! To think that, even for a moment, that our various environmental and, or government issues should be left entirely to our elected officialsis errored judgment. To do something and be wrong is forgivable. To do nothing is far worse. To do nothing and yet complain about the outcome is not forgivable at all. “A government of the People, by the People, and for the People“_______________________________________________________________
