I couldn’t help remembering the day when I was spit on and then punched in the face. My Little League baseball team had just won and “Fuzzy Mayer’s” team had lost. It was the summer of 1968 and tensions were high. He had lost his cool and his punch caused me to have to go to the doctor, ( I had to wear glasses after that and can’t hit a curveball to this day). Later that summer he said, “I am sorry that I spit on you.” He never apologized for that punch. But then, how do you take back a punch that causes permanent damage?
At the public hearing, Mr. Mayor, after some good people spoke to you and to the City Council about how concerned they were about annexation, you did not even hear those concerns. If you did, you might have addressed them in what turned out to be a train wreck of a response. You spit all over good, solid, prominent, generous citizens of Huntington County. Who want to stay in the “County”. They don’t want to “get out, get out”. Some, even if they wanted to, could not sell their homes and move to “Aboit” or “Wells County”. If they managed to go to those places, however, they would find something precious which we have not here, democracy. And no person interrupted you or was not respectful of you when you spoke. Again, you were not listening. But, if you would like to see and hear this “Must See Video”, it is available on the WANE web site and the audio of the entire meeting is on “huntingtondaily.com”.
I accept your apology for losing your composure at the meeting. We are all human beings and we make mistakes.
But, if you and the City Council decide to punch us in the face by forcing this land grab annexation through, then if there is a God in Heaven, we the good, solid, prominent, generous citizens of Huntington County will restore democracy! We will hold every councilman accountable. I will then release every “Bluedog Democrat” to attack those councilman who voted for this at every meeting. If you cannot pull in the reins of the “Updike machine” then give those reins up. If the Huntington School Board can reduce their budget and hold down taxes for next year, then why can’t y’all. Mr. and Mrs. Updike, in your own words, “people fear or reject change in life because it disrupts the way they are used to doing things”, “…life, including the life of our community, depends on change. Progress demands change.” I couldn’t agree more.
